Sleep Control
Sleep Wake Flip-Flop
Overview
This app visualizes the neurological "flip-flop" switch model of sleep and wakefulness. It demonstrates how the brain transitions between sleeping and waking states via mutual inhibition, preventing the body from existing in a half-awake/half-asleep state.
How to Use
The application presents two main systems: the Sleep System (vlPOA) and the Arousal System (Acetylcholine, Noradrenalin, Serotonin, Histamine).
- Click "Adenosine": Simulates the build-up of sleep pressure. The Sleep System glows green (stimulated), the Arousal System glows red (inhibited), and the right-pointing arrow glows red, demonstrating the Sleep System actively turning off the Arousal System.
- Click "Orexin": Simulates the release of wake-promoting neurotransmitters. The Arousal System glows green (stimulated), the Sleep System glows red (inhibited), and the left-pointing arrow glows red, demonstrating the Arousal System actively turning off the Sleep System.
- Click "Reset to Neutral": Clears all simulated interactions and returns the diagram to its baseline, inactive state.
Visual Key
- Green Glow: Indicates neurological stimulation / activation.
- Red Glow (Boxes): Indicates neurological inhibition / suppression.
- Red Glow (Arrows): Indicates the active pathway of mutual inhibition.
